WHAT ARE THE TRADITIONS OF CELEBRATING CHANUKAH?

  • Having a bigger Seudah (meal) all of Chanukah
  • Retelling the story of the Chanukah Miracle. (Kinda like on Passover)
  • Increase in Charity particularly to support the poor in Torah study
  • We do not fast on Chanukah
  • Women do not work during the time of the lighting of the menorah and men are to work to ensure that is possible.

Other traditions that have become customary:

  • Eating foods fried in oil to remind of the miracle with the oil like latkes and donuts.
  • Playing the dreidel game.
  • Giving the children gelt, money, not gifts.
  • Eating Dairy to remind of Yehudis.
